Jabir said:
Once I went to Kūfah mosque
and saw Imam Ali (pbuh). He was writing something by his finger and had a smile on his lips.”
I asked, ‘O, Amir Al mu`minin2! What happened?’
The Imam (pbuh) stated:
I wonder when a person reads the following verse,
but does not have proper and worthy knowledge about the meaning!
I asked, ‘Which verse [do you mean]?’
The Imam (pbuh) recited [Surah al-Noor, Verse 35 in the Holy Qur`an]:
️ اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاة، فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ الْمِصْبَاحُ فِي زُجَاجَةٍ الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ يُوقَدُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِيءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ نُورٌ عَلَى نُورٍ يَهْدِي اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ [نور/۳۵]
“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things. (The Holy Qur`an, surah al-Noor, verse 35)
«مِشکات» means “Niche” and it refers to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh&h)
, «مصباح»means “A Lamp” and it refers to me [Imam Ali (pbuh)],
« الزُّجاجَةٍ الزُّجاجَه» means “Glass” and it refers to Imam Hasan and Ḥusayn
«کوکب دُرّی» means “Brilliant Star” and it refers to ʿAlī ibn al Ḥusayn
«یوقَدُ مِن شجَرَة مبارکه» means “Lit from a blessed Tree” and it refers to Baqir al-‘Ulum1
«زیتونَه» means “An Olive”, and refers to Jaʿfar al-Sadiq
« لاشرقیّه» means “Neither of the east” and it refers to Imam Mūsá ibn Ja’far
Means “Nor of the west” Is Alī ibn Mūsā ar-Riḍā «لاغربیّه»
«یَکاد زَیتُها یُضی» means “ The Oil is well-nigh luminous” and it refers to Muḥammad ibn Alī,
«لَو لَم تَمسَسهُ نار» means” The Fire scarce touched” and it refers to is Hadi
«نور علی نور» means” Light upon Light” and it refers to Hasan al-Askari.
And «یَهدِی اللّه لِنورِه» means “Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light” and it refers to Mahdī
[May]Peace be upon them all.
«يَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ وَ اللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَئ عَلِيمٌ» خدا براى مردم مَثَلها مى زند و او به هر چیزى داناست.
Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things.”
۱-Ale Muhammad (pbuh&h) are: Prophet Muhammad (pbuh&h), her dignified daughter Fatima (pbuh) and the rest 12 Imams (pbu th)
۲-it is a title for Imam Ali (pbuh) [it refers to leading the Shiites]
۳- Imam Baqir (pbuh)’s nickname is Baqir or Baqir al-‘Ulum, as he split knowledge and uncovered the mysteries of sciences
